Castlefest / Noordwijk Post 3 - a day at the seaside
Wednesday was supposed to be the best weather, so we'd planned to spend it at the beach, unfortunately it was a bit grey and gloomy but we kept to plan, with the intention of also hiring bikes for a couple of days.
Turned out that the early bird catches the worm and all the bikes were gone! The campsite next door had two left, so Rob and I hired them whilst the others went straight to the local beach. We cycled on a path through the dunes, which was so pretty and tranquil, to Noordwijk-an-Zee in search for cheap beach towels. There was a little market in town and after an hour we'd found towels, ice cream and a fish sandwich stall.
yep, Rob and a mermaid. Again.
I wanted one of these so much!
icecream on the beach (the photo of me is so bad, nobody is ever going to see it, so here's Rob instead)
Cycled back along the dune path to meet the others, with a herring roll carefully packed in the basket of my bike - Dutch specialty of raw herring and chopped onion in a soft bread roll, rather delicious for a seafood lover like me!
After lunch, me, Cecile and Paul went into the sea, despite the weather getting a bit chilly - it actually felt warmer in the water!
Paul just going straight in, no standing round screaming at the waves for him!
It was actually quite enjoyable once you acclimatised, contrary to my expression in these photos
the wusses who decided to stay dry (apparently Simon went in the sea before we got there .....)
Pretending not to be cold in the brisk breeze
turns out my swimming dress is perfect for cycling in
Air dried on the beach by playing with Cecile's kites before heading back to our bungalow to clean up to go out for dinner. It started to rain, so we decided on a nearby pancake house Of Land and Sea. Beautiful decor and the food had great reviews online but I found it not as good as the one we tried in town last time. But I did try the bizarre combination of cheese and ginger pancake, so that was something.
