So it appears we have a choice between unventilated damp house with woodworm or a ventilated house with mice! :-(
We had a rather useless woodworm surveyor round yesterday morning - why they sent the tallest person in the world to investigate a tiny cupboard is beyond me! - so despite getting up early to clear out the cupboard and lift floorboards, he gave it a reluctant cursory check, complaining that he couldn't fit in the space.
The report told us nothing we didn't know already - staircase central support beam needs replacing but it doesn't look like the infestation has spread further. He stated this was because the rest of the wood had been treated, despite my explaining we'd lived here for nearly 20 years and it wasn't done during that time!
As their company also specialises in damp control and ventilation systems, we did try asking for advice on that, by this stage happy to throw money at the problem for someone else to fix but apparently they don't want our money, as they were not interested in quoting for anything further than the timber treatment (with many disclaimers)
Anyway, delayed for work, we left the cupboard as is for the day and Rob put everything back in the evening. Watching telly last night, heard a strange sound in the corner of the room and a rather traumatised mouse fell from the cupboard! Cue a frantic 10 minutes trying to catch it, which somehow Rob managed to do so with a coffee cup and released it at the end of the road .............. find another house!
Hoping it was just a random mouse that got in via the temporarily open floorboard; however that does still mean they're getting in under the house, despite us covering all the airbricks with mesh. Which is odd because I've not heard anything.
A rather expensive electromagnetic repeller ordered and a sleepless night listening out for more invaders. Nothing else heard, so fingers crossed.
