A few hours free before Unheilig tonight, so I can either tidy the flat or update LJ....so here goes, Leipzig report and piccies.  Getting better at photographing people instead of buildings, although I still keep forgetting I have the camera with me so have not got everyone! :-)
Wednesday, travelled to Berlin with [personal profile] miss_mordredand Martin from Luton airport, meeting with [personal profile] ermingand [profile] goth_hangoverat the airport (on their first beer already!).
No problems with flight, usual techno-phobe hassle with mastering the s-bahn ticket machines in Berlin.  Finally got us to our hotel in Alexanderplatz, although I did manage to get us slightly lost by taking the wrong exit from the station!
Our hotel, Motel One am Alexanderplatz was very nice.  Brand new, like a more trendy travelodge in style and ideally located.  Was very excited by our view from the window!

After a quick rest, we went for a wander.  Down to Hackescher Markt, where we were drawn in to stop for a beer in one of the beergardens with deckchairs.  Carried on through Musueminsel (unfortunately mostly covered in scaffolding, so not such a scenic walk!) to 12 Apostel pizzeria.  Quite pricy by Berlin standards but fantastic OTT decor and gorgeous, massive, wood-fired pizzas.
Walked to Last Cathedral from here, via the Berlin Dom, Lustgarten and Alexanderplatz - quite a long walk for my new boots!  Was very grateful to finally crash out there with a cocktail!  After a short while, we were gradually joined by various others who'd seen my post on the yahoo e-groups; two couples from the US and a group from the UK.  Rob was beginning to wonder what I get up to online, when all these people started to approach us, asking which one of us was Aly!  Had a very pleasant evening chatting, consuming many cocktails - absinth/sekt cocktail may have not been the wisest decision. :-)  Finally departed at around 2am to stagger back downhill to our hotel.

At the times I've been here, I've never realised what exactly I was holding onto at the top of the bannister! ;-)

This is what happens when you drink too many absinthe/sekt cocktails!

Thursday morning: Rob and I managed to get down in good time for breakfast, Rebecca and Martin eventually got there just in time!  A pretty good buffet breakfast for just 6euro.  Nice hotel overall, would recommend it for a short stay, probably not much longer though as the bedrooms were very small.
Spent the morning wandering around Alexanderplatz area before collecting our luggage and getting our train to Leipzig.  Travel by 1st class was very nice, Rebecca and I took advantage of the waiter service by ordering a small bottle of bubbly each.  Very decadent to have champagne on a train journey. :-)

Found our hotel in Leipzig with relative ease.  Not quite as central as we'd have hoped but at least easy enough to spot -probably the tallest building around!  Our room was on the 16th floor with a fantastic view of the city.  Room was not ready when we checked in, so we strolled into town for lunch - so hot though, didn't quite make it into town and stopped at the first cafe we found!

Think Rob has slight addiction issues!

Back to our hotel room to get ready to go out for the evening.  Met with Rebecca, Martin, [personal profile] morbidfrogand Simon in the lobby to head to Werk 2 to get our wristbands.  We arrived to find a long queue, leaving us a tad concerned that we wouldn't make it back in town for our table booking at Auerbachs Keller - fortunately we also spotted Nancy and Grant in the queue ahead.
Made it back, just about in time, also meeting with Mick and Esme at the restaurant.  Auerbachs Keller was very lovely, a posh beer hall to be quite honest, mostly famous for its featuring in Goethe's Faust.  Food was very rich but yummy - I had onion soup with a thick layer of gloopy cheese on top, followed by chicken with Apple brandy cream sauce and potato pancakes.

After the meal, we finished the night at Moritzbastei, where just about all of London were present!!  Retired back to our hotel at around 2am

Friday to follow in next post.  All the photos can be seen here: Aly's Lepzig 2008 album
