Celebrating with a little glass of mead the fact that I have just sewn on the final button (I think) for my military bodice, so the suit is complete! :-)
It was one of those outift ideas that came to me last autumn, so I figured WGT would be a good enough excuse/goal, to make it for.

Not going to reveal any pics of me actually wearing it until after WGT but here are some photos of the outfit itself.  *ahem* Excuse the mess, I really should find a better spot to photograph my creations.

The pattern was based on Truly Victorian's 1880 Jacket Bodice, altered slightly to give a 3/4 sleeve but with the cuff, lower cut at the neckline than a Victorian would wear :-), tabs closures and fitted so that I don't have to wear it with a corset (to allow for some comfort during WGT!)

Detail of the front tab closures

sleeves - cuff detail

arm patch created for me by Veil of Visions.  Epaulettes on the shoulder were made from gold braid, as unfortunately the shoulder cords I purchased were designed with male shoulders in mind and far too long!

detail of back pleat

a pretty last minute addition - braid detail on the sides, just about visible under the arms (seemed an odd place to put it but I saw similar on various Officers jackets and it does actually look pretty effective!)

And here is the skirt its going with (posted on here previously, i think but just to put it all together in one post).  The underskirt is a fishtail, to be worn with a hooped underskirt and the overskirt is Truly Victorian's Side Drape Bustle skirt.  It was originally ALL going to be made from camo fabric but I do like the contrast that the silk dupion gives on the overskirt and jacket trim.

wahoo, all done!  Next I need to finish my oriental jacket and the skirt to go with it, then if time permits I'm hoping to make a 1950's dress for WGT (but maybe it's more important to get on with my Sarabande dress instead, as I already have a few other 50's dresses to choose from for WGT).  And then at some point, I will be able to close the fabric box - until the next purchase!!

Very curious. Looking forwards to seeing it on in real life. Complete twist of old and modern.

I liked the idea of doing something historical but in the "wrong" fabric - there was a bustle dress at the Royal Geographic Society last year made completely out of maps, which gave me the idea!
Tricky trying to get the balance between the military look whilst still being elegant and feminine but I think I got there in the end!

Ironically, didn't use any of the military badges and patches I've collected over the past year as they just didn't look right with it (along with a slight concern about causing offence by using specific emblems)

Steve had that problem when buying military patches for his stage shirt, about causing offence... especially as neither of us knew what most of them represented!

But the outfit looks stunning, can't wait to see it on! And you've inspired me to make something in camo fabric, albeit a totally different style! Assuming I lose enough weight by WGT to pull it off, ha! :o)

Thanks! I already have my more "industrial" style camo outfit, for which I keep meaning to make a top to go with it (just about enough fabric left I think), so wanted something a bit more dressed up too.

Re causing offence, not just the obvious offensive emblems but I do exercise caution when wearing anything British military related too; particularly with current goings-on.
Like Rob has his lovely Welsh Guards jacket which we're debating whether or not would be acceptable to wear in Chepstow next weekend, given that its the type of area likely to have people with an army background; possibly still on duty out in the Middle East, so it could be a bit sensitive to wear.

I'm always cautious with proper Military stuff as i don't want to cause offence to some old geezer who fought for his country etc.

I like the idea of wrong fabrics. Camo is quite a destinctive one and the very nature of it's design (to hide things) will have made it tricky to work with.

camo fabric also hides a multitude of sins! For example, no need to try and match up the pattern, so in that effect easier than other patterned fabrics. :-)

So glad I got that green silk fabric - its the one I bought when we went to that market near Elephant and Castle. The colour goes perfectly and makes it a bit more dressed-up.

cool. That's another thing I'd like to make for WGT, as they'd be a great cover-up if I need to wear more practical footwear. So many little bits and pieces that I have in mind but no time to do them all!

I really like the back of the bodice, and the bustle section with gold fringing on the skirt. I would say that it be much better if we could see a picture of you in it, but I imagine you're waiting to surprise us all at a big event ;)

Of course, showing the garment hanging up doesn't really make the most of it's shape - but no, I can't give it all away until the weekend itself. :-)

....not to mention the fact that nobody would want to see what I look like after a day of sewing! :-)

An original idea! I'm finding it hard to picture how this will look - I trust there's a cunning masterplan behind it anyway and look forward to the photos of the end result!

It does work, honest! One of the rare occasions when I've had a vision of an outfit and its worked out pretty much exactly as visualised. :-)
